Backyard Terrorism: Responding to Hate Crimes in our Community

What is a “hate crime”?

· What impact do they have on communities?

· How can communities respond to and prevent hate crimes?

Randy Blazak has been studying participation in hate groups since the 1980s. He is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Portland State University and is the chair of Oregon’s Coalition Against Hate Crimes. His most recent book is Hate Offenders (Praeger, 2009). His current work involves researching the presence of racist gangs in prison and developing a program to help paroled white supremacist inmates abandon racism outside of prison. Blazak holds a PhD in Sociology from Emory University.
