Fear not — no spoiler alert in reading this article!
Since its 2010 premiere, Downton Abbey has totally captivated American audiences. Now in its fourth season (with a fifth being planned), you can see the new episodes on SOPTV beginning Sunday, January 5 at 9 p.m.
As you may know, Season Four has already been broadcast in the United Kingdom and Ireland. I’m not disclosing any information about Season Four in my message, so it is safe to continue reading.
For those of you unaware of Downton Abbey, this is an ensemble drama with a large cast of characters, similar to Upstairs, Downstairs. The series is set at the country estate of Downton Abbey and follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era. The history of the times is as much a character in the series as the actors. Events depicted throughout the series include news of the sinking of the R
MS Titanic in the first series; the outbreak of the First World War, the Spanish influenza pandemic, and the Marconi scandal in the second series; the Interwar period and the formation of the Irish Free State in the third series. In the fourth series, an American event is part of the plot. No disclosure — you’ll have to watch!
People love Downton Abbey! It is the most watched television series on both ITV in the U.K. and PBS, and subsequently became the most successful British costume drama series since Brideshead Revisited (also on Masterpiece in 1981). By the third series, Downton Abbey had become one of the most widely watched television shows in the world.
On December 14, 2013, Veranda Park, Topstitch Bernina, and SOPTV held a Downton Abbey preview screening event. Over 150 people attended, and many in period costumes had their pictures taken.
Thanks to you, Downton Abbey and other great programs are on SOPTV. Thank you for the work we do together!
