Overview
This proposal outlines the learning objectives and expected outcomes for a Southern Oregon Public Television Development Internship. The purpose of the internship is to research potential sources of production funding for films in production at Southern Oregon Public Television as well as developing the funding proposal.
Students who may be interested in this internship include those with majors/minors in: media studies, technical writing, business administration, and theater.
About the SOPTV Mission and Public Charge
Southern Oregon Public Television provides Public Broadcasting Service programming to Southern Oregon and Northern California and also creates quality programming of interest and value to its community. Southern Oregon Public Television is a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) affiliate, one of 349 public television stations in the United States. A trusted community resource, PBS uses the power of noncommercial television, the Internet, and other media to enrich the lives of all Americans through quality programs and education services that inform, inspire, and delight. Available to 99 percent of American homes with televisions and to an increasing number of digital multimedia households, PBS serves nearly 100 million people each week. The PBS network of stations offers employment opportunities in a variety of disciplines including communications, engineering, accounting, information technology, creative services, development, programming, interactive services, and many other areas.

The following learning goals have been established for the Southern Oregon Public Television Development Intern:

To gain an understanding of potential funding sources in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest

To identify the criteria for determining that a project is appropriate for funding

To recognize how funding opportunities and project goals may coincide

To understand how a production budget is constructed and monitored

To observe the team dynamics required for production planning, funding, and execution

To recognize the importance of partners in production planning and execution
Term of the Internship
The Southern Oregon Public Television Development Intern position is available throughout the year for a 10-12 week period. The intern will work approximately 6 hours per week on the project. The intern will have access to Southern Oregon Public Television computing resources and have seating and a phone available here at the office after 1pm Monday-Thursday and all day on Friday. There is to be no financial compensation to the student. The intern will work with Maureen Battistella (Development Manager) and Dotti Wilson (Development Director) to develop the funding proposals. Maureen Battistella will be the student's onsite supervisor and serve as the liaison with SOU for the internship.
Potential Projects
The selection of the project is to be determined by Southern Oregon Public Television based on station programming priorities.
Evaluation of Learning
By the end of the internship period, the student will have accomplished the following goals:

Identify at least four potential funding foundations

Identify community partners that may have an interest in participating in the project

Describe additional services, materials, and resources that may extend the reach and impact of the project and budgetary requirements for each

Determine project outcome assessments and timelines

Develop proposals to at least one funding source
At the end of the internship period, the onsite supervisor will meet with the intern to review the intern's performance and accomplishments. A written report of the intern's performance and accomplishments will be provided to the instructor within 10 days of the end of the internship period.
