Are libraries in danger of becoming obsolete in the 21st Century? Emphatically Not, according to Dale Vidmar, professor of information literacy and instruction at Southern Oregon University’s Hannon Library. Dale will examine the future of libraries in a talk entitled “Libraries in the 21st Century” on Thursday, February 18th at 4:00 p.m. in the Meese Room (#305), Third Floor of the Hannon Library. Light refreshments will be served, and there will be time to ask questions.
Dale will pose such questions as these: What is a library? Where is the library? What is the purpose of a library in the age of Googleopolis, Web 2.0 to Web x.0, iPods, iPhones, and iJustabouteverythings?
Drawing from personal and professional experience, he will lead attendees on a journey of exploration, examining libraries past, present, and future. He will also examine their future roles in a dynamic, technological culture. From the Royal Library of Alexandria to the Tanimura & Antle Family Library at California State University, Monterey Bay, and beyond, from chaos to democracy, from books and periodicals to Kindles and questions, Vidmar will consider the role of libraries and librarians in the lives of individuals and communities.
Dale Vidmar is a graduate and alumnus of Southern Oregon University and Kent State University. He is well known in the Pacific Northwest information science community.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in lots 21 and 27. For more information, call 541-552-6835.
