SOPTV Parents

SOPTV Parents is an outreach effort to bring exceptional books, activities, and even PBS parenting resources to our audience.

Raising Readers

Be sure to check out our Raising Readers page. Funded by a Ready To Learn grant from the United States Department of Education, the Ready To Learn initiative is developing engaging PBS KIDS Raising Readers television programs, exciting games, playful Web sites, and easy-to-use learning resources for kids, parents, caregivers, and teachers — all with the goal of helping children ages 2 to 8 get ready to read.

MEDIA LITERACY: Making The Most of Screen Time

MEDIA LITERACY: Sharon MayThis 1 1/2 hour online streaming workshop demonstrates how PBS Kids shows can be used by parents, home-schoolers, childcare providers and preschool teachers, anyone who cares for kids, to supplement what they are already doing to help young children get ready to read. Getting kids ready to read involves more than reading books to them. Children 3-5 can be learning their alphabet letters and sounds, that letters strung together make words, that many words belong to "families," that understanding what is read is just as important as reading. And these pre-reading skills can be taught in a fun way using educational television programs.

Parenting Counts

Parenting CountsThis outreach to parents includes the Parenting Counts multimedia initiative developed by KCTS and Talaris Research Institute to help adults understand how children think, feel, and learn in the early years.
