Young Writers & Illustrators Contest 2006
2006 Reading Rainbow Contest Celebration
More than 160 excited children and their parents gathered together on Saturday April 29, 2006 to celebrate the creative children of Southern Oregon and congratulate the winners of Southern Oregon Public Television’s 2006 Reading Rainbow Contest for Young Writers and Illustrators. Rebecca Olien, Art Educator at the Schneider Museum of Art and author of Kids Write! (Williamson, 2005) taught a hands-on children’s workshop, "Exaggeration Makes a Really Funny Story." The Rogue Valley Mall outside of Clas E. Professor was filled with shouting children, sparking joyful fun and imagination throughout the morning.
Almost 200 children from Chiloquin to Brookings and from Yreka to Roseburg sent stories for consideration. The stories provide an unusual insight into the mind and emotions of kindergarten through 3rd grade children. The rules of the contest are specific and must contain a set number of words and companion illustrations appropriate for each grade in order to be eligible for consideration. A team of impartial judges with experience in elementary education reviewed and ranked the stories. SOPTV congratulates the teachers and parents of all children who participated in the contest.
This is the 12th annual Reading Rainbow Contest for Young Writers and Illustrators organized by Southern Oregon Public Television. Southern Oregon Public Television provides quality broadcast programming that educates, entertains, enlightens, and inspires. Reading Rainbow is broadcast daily at 2:30 pm and is designed to teach young children how to read as well as encourage parents to read to their children.
