THE LEARNING TRIANGLE - MAY 2008
Theme:
Active For Life
Caregivers don't have to look far to find youngsters who are already overweight. One way to fight bulging waistlines is to get kids moving, learning, and practicing skills appropriate to their ages. Do:
Viewing PBS Kids television shows about sports can inspire children to get up and do it. The key is to turn off the set after children view the activity.
Tape the Teletubbies Go Exercise broadcast May 15. The music and movement inspire kids to exercise along. Use it frequently to "get up and go," especially on days when outside time is limited or kids have the wiggles.
Dance along with Barney or other characters on TV. Play different kinds of music to dance to.
Show toddlers how to roll a good-sized ball, kick it, and toss it. Put an empty laundry basket out for children to practice tossing or kicking the ball into the basket.
Make a fun bowling game using 10 clean plastic soda liter bottles half full of water colored with food coloring. Set up like bowling pins and have children roll the ball at them to knock them down.
On a pleasant day, ask the children to move from one side of the play yard to the other in many different ways: hopping, jumping, running, baby steps, big steps, backwards, crawling, rolling, etc.
Using a sponge ball, practice kicking and bouncing the ball off body parts other than hands.
Play pathway dribble by laying out winding pathways with parallel ropes or tape. Children can softly dribble balls with their feet along the path.
Online, find other activities at PEC: Preschool Physical Education Lesson Plans.
