On Sunday, January 17 at 3 PM, Music at Mark’s presents the Stauffer Duo–Thomas Stauffer, cellist, and Cynthia Darby, pianist–in a program of music for cello and piano by Bach, Beethoven, Magnard, and Joan Tower. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is located at 5th and Oakdale in Medford. This program is free and a reception will follow.
The Stauffer Duo has been performing the cello and piano literature together since 1980, covering the repertoire from the Baroque Period to the 21st Century. Cellist Thomas Stauffer, Professor Emeritus of Music at San Diego State University, is a recitalist, chamber musician and coach. He was a Fulbright fellow at the Music Academy of Zagreb, Croatia, and a Student extraordinÃ¤r at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Vienna. He has served as a faculty member at Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley, and was a long-term member of the Bloch Quartet (in residence at the University of California, Davis) and principal cellist of the San Diego Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Stauffer is known not only for his performances of the standard repertoire, but also as a proponent of new music with many premieres to his credit.
Pianist Cynthia Darby is a recitalist and chamber musician, and has been a guest of several orchestras. Ms. Darby was graduated from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She was a fellowship recipient to the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood. She has served on a number of faculties including MIT, the Boston Community Music School, University of San Diego and San Diego State University.
