STUDENT SHOWCASE: Mindy Mawhirter and Scout Boicey
Duo Interpretation (South Medford High School)
"My Party" (by D.M. Larson — A Duo Interpretation Presentation)
Mindy Mawhirter
I have been interested in theater my entire life, and I joined speech and debate because I thought I would be good at it. When I saw that there was a way to mesh the two, I was thrilled. I have debated in a few tournaments and was a finalist with this duo interpretation. I also participate in theater at school and at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater in Medford. When I first started, I had the worst stage fright; I couldn’t even get through an audition properly. Teen Musical Theater of Oregon really helped me with that. After performing a few times, I just got over it, and I’m extremely grateful for that. I hope to turn this acting experience into a successful career. I want to be a Director, but acting will always be my passion. I love duo interpretation, and I hope to do it for many years to come. I am currently learning to play the piano and learning American Sign Language. I also recently learned how to juggle.
Scout Boicey
I joined speech and debate last year as a freshman and only competed in public debate. This year I started to do duo interpretation with Mindy Mawhirter. I have competed in several tournaments with public debate but have only competed with duo in one tournament in which my partner and I were finalists. I am also treasurer of my school’s Key club and play the cello in the concert orchestra. I am not sure what my future plans are beyond college, but I know that the skills I have gained from speech and debate will help me in the future.
