A WINNING COMBINATION

At SOPTV, “made possible by the financial support of viewers like you” is a true statement.  Because of your gifts, SOPTV is available to all in southern Oregon and northern California — including those who can’t afford to contribute and those who have yet to join in supporting programs they love.

Thanks to you and other members of SOPTV, our fiscal 2014 ended strongly with $651,050 in membership support. This represents a 12 percent increase over the prior year; however, we are still recovering from the financial downturn in 2008, when SOPTV’s membership peaked ($721,620).

Thanks to your support, we renewed our commitment for the next full year of PBS programs as well as renewed licenses for SOPTV-Create and SOPTV-World. As noted above, it’s your support that enables SOPTV to offer “the best television on television.”

In our recent poll many of you expressed support for mysteries, science, and nature programming — followed by documentaries, costume/period dramas, news and public affairs, and British comedies. Not surprisingly, Masterpiece was most often mentioned in conjunction with Downton Abbey and Sherlock.

Downton Abbey has received several Primetime Emmy nominations: Best Drama Series; Best Actress in a Drama Series for Michelle Dockery for her role as “Lady Mary Crawley”; Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for actresses Dame Maggie Smith, two-time winner for her role as the “Dowager Countess of Grantham” and Joanne Froggatt, her second nomination as “Anna”; Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Jim Carter as “Carson,” his third nomination; and Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Paul Giamatti for his performance as “Harold Levinson.”

Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock: His Last Vow, was nominated for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. Ironically Benedict is up against Martin Freeman (who plays Dr. Watson in the series) for his performance in Fargo. Martin has also been nominated for Best Supporting Actor as Dr. Watson in Sherlock: His Last Vow. The 66th Emmy Award winners for primetime programming will be announced on August 25th.
